Shu Yong advocates building bridges for Asian peace and development
On 26 March, Shu Yong, member of CPPCC National Committee and member of China Artists Association, delivered a keynote speech at the Youth Leaders Exchange on “Future of Asia” of the Asia Youth Leaders Forum. Following is the full text of the speech.
Good afternoon. I am Shu Yong, an art worker. I am honored to be here at this Asia Youth Leaders Forum to exchange ideas with youth leaders from Asia and share cooperation opportunities for a better future.
The theme of this forum is to enhance youth cooperation, strengthen common values, and promote the peace and development of Asia. In the face of a host of global challenges, no country can stand alone. It requires different sectors, civilizations, and groups to overcome differences and divides, engage in constructive dialogue, enhance mutual understanding, and reach consensus. Only by strengthening international cooperation can we promote common development. Therefore, it is of greater significance to discuss global issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and enable youth leaders to have a deeper and holistic understanding of global challenges and opportunities. And this is the mission Asia Youth Leaders Forum has taken on, serving as a “bridge” to pool consensus and as a bridge for youth leaders of Asia that fosters friendship, cooperation, development, and communication.
The bridge is a physical construct that connect spaces. The Zhaozhou Bridge, built during the Sui Dynasty, is still in use today. Connecting people across the Pearl River, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is a bridge of dreams, unity, confidence, and rejuvenation. The bridge is also an important medium to connect people's hearts and ideals. The "Magpie Bridge" on the Double Seventh Festival conveys the passion of Chinese people for a beautiful and happy love life. More importantly, the bridge the link between nations. In 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative, which heralded a new era of win-win cooperation and common development and promoted the building of a human community with a shared future, visualizing before us a bridge of peace and development that spans gaps and connects the future.
How can we connect with the world? Each civilization has its own beauty, and diversity spells greater beauty. The flower is a symbol of beauty and an international language. The flower can often represent the character of a country or a people. In the garden of world civilizations, we can build a bridge of peace and development. This idea immediately ignited my creative passion. After numerous difficulties, I finally completed this magnificent amber-colored golden bridge in 2015, becoming a “bridge builder”.
I happened to receive the invitation from the Milan Expo at the time, so I brought the “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” all the way across mountains and seas to the birthplace of European Renaissance, Italy. It was the first time that people around the world had learned about the Belt and Road Initiative through an artistic bridge. The bridge is based on China's oldest bridge, Zhaozhou Bridge. It incorporates various national flowers into the golden bricks of the bridge. Once the dazzling “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” made its debut, it became the focus of global attention. Its grand and magnificent appearance left visitors to the Expo in awe. A single flower does not make spring, while one hundred flowers in full bloom herald its coming. In this golden bridge of peace on display in the garden of the world, visitors from around the world could find their national flowers on the golden bricks of the bridge, which inspired resonance in an instant.
Its international influence generated at the Expo led to an invitation from UNESCO’s Silk Roads Programme. They hoped that the “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” could go on exhibition in more countries. In 2016, the “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” returned to Beijing and made a splendid appearance on Chang'an Avenue, marking the first contemporary art exhibit on Chang'an Avenue since the founding of PRC. The “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” frequently appeared in various major events later, such as two sessions of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, the first Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations, the celebration of the 100th anniversary of CPC’s founding, and two sessions of the China International Fair for Trade in Services. It became a witness to the great vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity. The “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” was even included in high-school politics textbooks, as well as a series of authoritative theoretical books such as A Concise History of Socialist Development and Facing the Party's Centenary. During the National Day celebrations in 2022, the “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” was featured in the Extraordinary Decade special page of People’s Daily on a prominent position of the page’s header. It was also included in the latest volume of A Promise with Youth to Make a Great Nation.
Up till January 2023, China has signed more than 200 cooperation agreements with 150 countries and 32 international organizations to advance the Belt and Road Initiative. The “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” has also collected signatures from nearly 100 heads of state on its golden bricks, representing the recognition of the Belt and Road Initiative by countries around the world. I remember, in 2019, at the invitation of the capital of Kazakhstan, I planned to build the world's first “Golden Bridge on Silk Road” square in the city. Then President Nazarbayev met with me and spoke highly of the “Golden Bridge on Silk Road”. He also invited the presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to join him in signing on the golden bricks to show support for the Belt and Road Initiative. During Dr. Kissinger's visit to China, I also invited him to sign on a golden brick. At first, he hesitated. So, I explained to him that this bridge symbolized peace and friendship and was a bridge of amity for the people of the world. He then gladly accepted the invitation and became the first American to sign on the golden bridge.
The period from 2013 to today has been the decade of the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the decade of the “Golden Bridge on Silk Road”. This bridge has gone from conception to creation, traveled from abroad to home, and evolved from exhibitions to signatures. It has been well received domestically and internationally. It is an important achievement on the cultural journey of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Building roads and bridges to cross mountains and riversis a Chinese tradition. I wish to join efforts with all youth leaders here at the Asia Youth Leaders Forum to build and cross bridges, promoting peace and development in Asia through cultural exchanges and contributing to humanity’s development.
Thank you.
