On 25 March, Yao Zhiqiang, co-founder of CloudWalk Technology and general manager of its Guangdong branch, delivered a keynote speech at the High-quality Development Forum of the Asia Youth Leaders Forum. Following is the full text of the speech.

Experts,

It is an honor to be able to represent Nansha’s AI companies and share my thoughts with you.

We specialize in AI. At this point in time, there is no escaping from the heated discussion on artificial general intelligence (AGI), that is, ChatGPT, and the profound impact of the industry on future societies. This is what I will talk about today, as well as how it can empower high-quality development. 

At the end of 2022, the AI program ChatGPT achieved a historic leap from AI to AGI. Usually, we have accepted the fact that AI can outperform humans in some niche fields. There is AlphaGo and so on. Every company has followed this business paradigm towards their application in business. However, we do not believe that AI is as good in many scenarios in the human life. This is why we often say that artificial intelligence under many circumstances seem to become artificial idiots. 

But now there is ChatGPT. It has shattered our biases. Particularly, it will have a significant impact on future business models. Once we finish training such a large model or a AGI model, it can be applied in countless business scenarios. Future marginal cost is bound to be on constant decrease. The impact on our future can be game-changing. Baidu has released ERNIE Bot, and we can feel that the impact is really there. 

We had thought that AGI was still far away from us, and that even in simple conversations, the intelligence was lacking. However, they now can act like a normal person and answer our questions. How do we seize these opportunities to enhance the high-quality development of the industry? We believe that there are several opportunities:

Firstly, it can solve such transformative problems as industry digitalization. Usually in industry upgrading, companies pay attention to the technological upgrade of some single points, or individual equipment. They rarely view it from the top – the whole industry chain or the entire production process, so the results often fail to meet expectations. The emergence of AGI allows us to stand at a very good vantage point and see the whole picture. Therefore, we believe that it will produce great opportunities for digital upgrading of industries.

Secondly, we often talk about unearthing the value of data. We have many data, and we have been digitalizing for many years. But oftentimes the data tend to be just data, without their value being discovered. We think the main reason for this is the lack of experts – cross-disciplinary experts – to work out the correlations between data. Now there is a good assistant, which is AGI. Through general knowledge, it can naturally find the relationships between data, and figure out the value through these relationships. In this way, we only need to provide our demands, and AGI will help us find the correlations in this pile of data and give the answers we want.

Thirdly, we may make it better and more efficient for ordinary citizens in their daily life. We say that we have achieved a lot in terms of “a single portal for all matters”. But there is the opportunity to change it from “single” to “smart”. That is to say, I don’t need to learn what is needed in the process, what documents need to be prepared. All I need is to tell it my demand, and it will automatically help me prepare and obtain the data and get the matter done. This way, the process at the counter when we need something done will be more efficient, and the consideration will be more thorough for us.

All in all, we think there will be many such great opportunities for us to make use of it. But this is not something simple that a company or agency can achieve alone. There needs to be concerted effort. Even in the US, this is not an easy task. It is a complex and systematic endeavor, like landing on the moon. At present, there is computing power, data, algorithms, and their application – such varied scenarios, there needs to be many companies or research institutions working together to push this forward. Therefore, it is best to have a way of cooperation – whether it’s alliance or some other win-win methods – to advance this goal, so that it can develop faster.
