Liang Weiqiang says innovation drives sustained high-quality development
On 25 March, Liang Weiqiang, deputy director of GAC R&D Center, shared his thoughts at the High-quality Development Forum of the Asia Youth Leaders Forum. Following is an excerpt from his speech.
Question: Please tell us about you and your understanding of high-quality development.
I am Liang Weiqiang, from GAC R&D Center. Allow me to briefly talk about GAC Group. It is a large corporation with businesses spanning vehicles, parts, commerce, and mobility services. Our vision is to constantly create value for humanity’s good mobility life.
Back to high-quality development, we think it means improving the quality as well as efficiency in economic growth. There are several aspects. There is scientific and technological innovation. And then there is decarbonization and intelligence. In terms of these two and scientific and technological innovation, GAC Group has dedicated many resources, so as to improve the group’s momentum for sustainable development.
Question: What roles does high-quality development play in our work? Can you expound with a recent example on the relationship between scientific and technological development and high-quality development?
What are the goals of high-quality development? Through high-quality development, we hope to achieve sustainable social, economic, and environmental development. For such sustainable development, innovation is the biggest driving force, with two layers of meaning. The first is decarbonization. The second is intelligence. Let’s talk about decarbonization first. China is promoting the development of NEVs – intelligent, connected NEVs – in the hope that NEV development will drive energy into a closed loop and realize carbon peak in 2030 and carbon neutrality in 2060, a balance between human and environment. To achieve decarbonization, not only the types and proportion of energy consumption need to go down, but comprehensive recycling is also important, including battery recycling, car recycling – just now there has been mention of car recycling platforms. These are all very important.
The second layer is intelligence. Intelligence is manifested in two aspects. The first is autonomous driving. The other is smart cockpit. Autonomous driving is the biggest foundation of intelligence, which Mr. Yu, who is seated on my right, and his Qcraft is doing very well. Autonomous driving integrates AI, big data, cloud platform, and other relevant technologies. As for us, we make cars. I mentioned earlier that GAC’s vision is to constantly create value for humanity’s good mobility life. The foundation of this value is our self-driving vars, including technological advancement. Only through this, can we free our hands, feet, eyes, and brains from driving. When the car is driving, we can make full use of the time originally spent on driving to do more efficient work. This is when smart cockpit comes in.
These two methods of high-quality development I just mentioned, decarbonization and intelligence, happen to be what two of the panelists are working on.
Question: Now that cars are hailed as the third-generation mobile platform after smartphones and tablets, what do you think are the common challenges facing the global automotive industry?
I just did a quick thinking. I think there may be two points. We often say that believing is seeing and that seeing is achieving. So first I think it is perception. Mr. Yu mentioned intelligent driving and future autonomous driving. Whether it’s sensing, decision-making, planning, controlling, or positioning, there are many new technologies. This all requires the ability to predict. Likewise, in the automotive industry, what we are creating is not cars, but a mobility life. A mobility life calls more for connection. From mobility on the road to mobility since walking out the door, to mobility in the parking lot, and mobility in the house, whether it’s on the road or in the sky, these are all possibilities that we can expand into in the future. GAC Group is dedicated to the complete idea of mobility life instead of merely cars. We will constantly expand and dig deeper. So, I think the first is perception.
