全文如下:
主席先生、女士们、先生们:
Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen,
it is my great pleasure to have this opportunity to address young people at the Asia Youth Leaders Forum of 2023. Throughout my long political career, which actually started at the age of 27, I have always insisted and maintained that young people have a very important role to play in all countries' development and progress. That is because I believe that young people have three very important assets.
The first is that young people are open-minded, open to new things, open to changes. And therefore, they'll be able to catch new trends and look at the possibilities that they create. This is very important in any society or country that wants to move forward.
Secondly, young people have the energy, and therefore with the vision they've formed, they can then pursue that in a vigorous and dynamic manner.
And thirdly, I believe young people tend not to be corrupted. And with that integrity, they're able to drive forward towards the true public or national interest.
I hope all of you participants here will put these assets to good use. No doubt, you'll be discussing a number of today's problems that we all face. And no doubt much of it will be centered around the use of new technology for many purposes. For instance, I'm sure you'll be discussing about how we might raise the quality of life in urban areas by creating smart cities. We'll be talking about how we can fight poverty by using technology to raise productivity in the agricultural sector. And no doubt, we will be talking about how we could use technology to help make sure that development is sustainable and environmentally friendly. These are all important topics, and I'm sure there'll be many, many new ideas from young people. But if there's a message that I would like to leave you, it is this. Your generation has grown up in an era where so many opportunities were created by openness and globalization. It was also an era when we thought there will be an end to ideological conflicts. But recent events in the last few years have reversed many of these trends from the necessary restrictions that were put in during COVID, through to geopolitical tensions, trade wars, and an actual war in the Ukraine. What we have seen is deglobalization in the forms of disruptions to the supply chain, and the rise of nationalism and protectionism. Worse still, there is now increasing tension between the two biggest economies of the world. And unless this changes, future years threaten to be defined by an era of ideological conflict returning us to the Cold War world. What I believe all you young people from different nations can do at this very forum is to demonstrate that despite the fact that we come from different countries with different histories and culture, and that there are differences among us, we can work together. There are common aspirations, there are shared values that can guide us through a series of cooperation on issues that I've already mentioned and many other more. If you can do this, you will be sending a very strong signal to the older generations that we mustn't return to Cold War mentality. But rather, we will continue to make sure that the whole world joins together with shared values, despite our differences, so that we can advance towards a better life for all the citizens of the world. I wish you a very fruitful discussion and a successful forum.
