Lateefa Al Saedi shares the UAE model of youth empowerment
On 26 March, Lateefa Al Saedi, member of Youth Councils of the UAE, delivered a keynote speech at the China and UAE Dialogue between the Youth Leaders of the Asia Youth Leaders Forum. Following is the full text of the speech.
Esteemed guests,
Good afternoon. I’m Lateefa Al Saedi from the Youth Councils of the United Arab Emirates. I am delighted to attend and be part of the Asia Youth Leaders Forum, and I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about my thoughts and experiences.
I would take you a step back to 1971, when our rulers established a federal government made up of seven emirates. This union has resulted in remarkable achievements. The late president of the United Arab Emirates His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan said, “A country’s greatest investment lies in building generations of educated and knowledgeable youth.” The government of the United Arab Emirates prioritizes the youth sector as one of its first priorities and believes that the younger generation are the future.
Speaking on the latest achievement of the UAE, the UAE government is hosting COP28 this year, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE, assigned Her Excellency Shamma Al Mazrui as a Youth Climate Champion to lead the youth agenda during COP28. The government believes that the youth are the solutions to tackling climate change challenges. The visions of the United Arab Emirates leaders is enabling the Emirati youth to become a model and leading the world in all fields. The vision revolves around providing the educational means and engagement through listening to the youth’s ideas and thoughts and then implementing them. In the UAE, the government has established youth councils across seven emirates: multiple corporate entities and federal entities, as well as global groups.
Youth Councils have been a great platform for the youth to get mor involved in solving local problems and making decisions and recommendations for the future. Our model of empowering youth in the UAE starts at the top with the establishment of the UAE Youth Council, which considers a member of each emirate in the UAE. Cascading down, there are seven local youth councils formed across the seven emirates. It then branches off to corporate entities and federal entities, where there are more than 150 youth councils. This model ensures the inclusiveness of all youth across multiple platforms, and up to now it covers more than 2,000 youth council members, working together towards the growth of the youth sector within the UAE.
Emirati and Chinese youth are both innovative and full of ideas and aspirations. Providing a platform such as youth councils would be useful in tackling challenges and enabling the youth to express their opinions. It is important for us to learn from each other, and that would lead to innovation and prosperity. We should all join hands and move forward into a more modernized and creative future. The vision behind the UAE and China joining hands is to develop an enabling environment for the youth’s growth and development. This would lead to nurturing the next generation’s leaders and increasing their level of social skills, academic accomplishments, and self-efficacy. The youth would be able to support the government’s march towards sustainable development and foreseeing the future to meet global challenges, as well as ensuring the happiness and satisfaction of the community.
In the forum, we were able to share one of UAE’s models of empowering youth: youth councils. It has been an honor to be among such accomplished individuals and to be able to share the UAE model of enabling youth and how we can expand on such efforts with China. Thank you.
