Takeuchi Ryo says China-Japan culture exchange has been ushered in a new era

On 25 March, Takeuchi Ryo, a documentary director, delivered a keynote speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Asia Youth Leaders Forum. Following is the full text of the speech.

Hello everyone. I am Takeuchi Ryo, a documentary director. I live in Nanjing, China. I’d like to thank the Asia Youth Leaders Forum for the invitation.

There are many forms of international exchanges. Just now, Mr. Wu Dajing has mentioned the importance of sports. I can’t agree more. Last year, I went to Qatar to film the World Cup for a documentary project. People who speak different languages sang and danced together. That was very moving to me. In this world of constant strife, I was deeply touched. When the Japanese team beat the German and Spanish teams, Chinese friends were also happy for us. That touched me to the core. I was reminded once again sports could indeed transcend national boundaries.

Aside from sports, cultural exchanges are also important in international exchanges. I often join Japanese youth and Chinese youth in idea exchange sessions. Animation is a topic that generates lively discussions. Anime-related subjects haven’t failed to get people talking, for example, Naruto Uzumaki, One Piece, Slam Dunk, and Miyazaki Hayao’s works. They can stimulate intense discussion and in turn foster relationship. There has been a new phenomenon recently: the export of Chinese TV shows. For examples, suspense dramas like The Long Night and The Bad Kids and Chinese palace dramas are spreading into Japan. I look forward to the dawning of a new era when Chinese and Japanese youth talk about Chinese shows.

In addition to TV shows, many Chinese products are well accepted by Japanese young people. Among Japanese young women, Chinese cosmetics are very popular. They adore Chinese makeups. They have a term for such women, called “Chiborg”, which has been very popular in recent years. Japanese women think that Chinese makeups have very cute packaging. This is from the perspective of Japanese women. Among Japanese young men, Chinese video games are very popular, for example, Genshin Impact. I haven’t played the game, but the game seemed to be very popular in Japan. Recently, RED and TikTok are also gaining Japanese users.

When I was young, the impression of Chinese products or Chinese services tended to be cheap, dated, fragile, or bad in general. However, young people nowadays have a different take. They think Chinese products are cool and accept them whole-heartedly. I think China-Japan exchange has indeed entered a new era.

As a documentary director, I want to make projects that are relevant to this new era. Very recently, I filmed a documentary called Yangtze River. From the river source, Qinghai, to Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shanghai, 6,300 kilometers in total. This stretch of 6,300 kilometers, I walked them all and filmed the life along the Yangtze River into a documentary. It has been uploaded on the internet and is well received by Japanese audience. This film will also hit the theater in May this year. More specifically, in the end of May, in cinemas around Japan. I hope this film about the Yangtze River will showcase the real China of today to the Japan of today, as Japanese media tend to report bad things about China. I want this film to describe in an objective fashion the charms of China and show them to Japanese viewers.

Lastly, the cyber world today is filled with biased information. For the past three years, due to the pandemic, direct exchanges between China and Japan dropped drastically. Information about what was happening over the border was accessed predominantly through the internet, which made the information even more biased. This is exactly why, having been through the pandemic, we need to use documentaries or other works to activate once again real exchanges between the two countries. I have faith especially in young people’s flexible mindset and openness. I’d like to join you young fellows in reducing biases and misunderstandings around the world, increasing positive thinking, and creating a bright prospect for Asia and the world. I’ll end here. Thank you.
